Black Frost is Atlus' evil rendition of the more good-spirited demon Jack Frost. The word ja'aku in its Japanese name when written in kanji (邪悪) means "wicked" or "evil," hence its dark characteristics, as well as being a pun off of "Jack" (Jāku).
Black Frosts are Jack Frosts that grew powerful and evil due to yearning for dark powers and remembering their nature as a demon, being an evolved variant of the peace-loving winter fairy. Along with an increased size, their skin becomes darkened and their attire turns from blue to purple.
Along with retaining high resistance/immunity to ice attacks like their ice brethren, they also share high resistance/immunity like their firey brethren. Their evil nature however, means that they cannot resist light-based attacks in the games in which it is present.
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne[]
Black Frost is an optional boss in Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne. Hoping to become as powerful as the "King," Hee-ho-kun stumbles upon the Satan Magatama. Ingesting it made him transform into Black Frost.
Black Frost would later take over Kabukicho Prison long after the Mizuchi jailer has been vanquished, and proceeds to freeze the facility, declaring himself Great Emperor and taking several Jack Frosts as his subordinates. The Demi-fiend must first learn of the Emperor taking residence from a Principality in the Mantra HQ after Chiaki Tachibana inherits power from the fallen Gozu-Tennoh. When he revisits the facility, it's thoroughly frozen over, and at the top floor he runs into Black Frost, he will force the Demi-fiend into battle to test out his new powers as the new Great Emperor. This proves to be a mistake for him however, as he eventually reverts to Hee-ho-kun before melting away, leaving behind the Satan Magatama.
Black Frost will later reappear in the Third Kalpa of the Labyrinth of Amala. If the Demi-fiend runs into him in the first switch room after the impromptu tag battle with Dante has ended, he will forcibly join the party (provided there is a spot available for him), as Black Frost believes that he would become even stronger if he partners up with a demon more powerful than he was. He declines to state how he came back... or why he returned in a much smaller size.
If Demi-fiend already has another Black Frost with him however, he will become angry and leave the premises, returning home.
Shin Megami Tensei IMAGINE[]
Black Frost originally only appeared as variants and acting as the final boss of the Stray Jack Frost quest. He was finally officially implemented during an event in early 2013 and his plug-in item was added as a drop in the endchest of his boss room for the Stray Jack Frost quest. He is a special triple fusion of Jack Frost, Pyro Jack and Baphomet. There are a variety of player equips based on Black Frost's appearance.
Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue[]
Black Frost is the main antagonist and final boss of this game. He killed almost all of the Jack Frosts and Jack o' Lanterns prior to the events of the game and froze the last Jack o' Lantern in an ice cube. He can be seen several times during the game prior to his boss encounter.
In reality, the rampage of Black Frost has started from a failure to synchronize with the mind of the programmer Jones, which made Black Frost go berserk. After his defeat, Jones, in the form of J, was able to take control on Black Frost and asked Jack Frost and Jack o' Lantern to kill Black Frost with the hope of returning home.
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey[]
"A Jack Frost that grew powerful and evil. These are the evolved form of the peaceable winter fairy. They turn from a small prankster into a massively powerful entity."
—Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey compendium
Black Frost is one of the demons only obtainable by special fusion. Which it requires a triple fusion between Jack Frost, Pyro Jack and Incubus.
Black Frost is a boss in the Challenge QuestTrack an Escaped Demon. Tired of the pointless work and basically serving as a refrigerator, a Jack Frost turns into Black Frost in order to escape and live a life of laziness. He refuses to go back to the labor and attacks Nanashi. Upon defeat he calls humans the real demons, but admits that he just wanted to have some exercise and goes back after thanking him for playing with him.
Black Frost can be created through a special fusion of King Frost, Balor and Baphomet. He can teach Nanashi the Ice Breath, Taunt and Mamudo skills through his Demon Whisper. Black Frost benefits from learning Ice, Darkness and support skills. While King Frost is an ingredient in his fusion, King Frost's King Bufula skill is not allowed to be passed to Black Frost through fusion.
Shin Megami Tensei V[]
"A Jack Frost that grew powerful and evil. These are the evolved form of the fairly peaceful winter fairy and mark the transformation from small prankster into massively powerful entity."
—Shin Megami Tensei V lore
A Black Frost appears in Ginza in order to become its emperor after failing at Kabukicho (referring to the events in Nocturne). It gets into conflict with Dionysus, who doesn't wish for Black Frost to monopolize his alcohol for Black Frost's own gain. The protagonist can either side with Black Frost or Dionysus to get rid of the other. Supporting Black Frost begins the "Black Frost Strikes Back" quest; upon completion, Black Frost will join the protagonist's party, provided that they don't already have him and space is avaliable. If the protagonist sides with Dionysus, he defeats Black Frost, who concedes and leaves the area.
Black Frost can be fused requiring a special fusion of King Frost, Baphomet and Loa.
Should the protagonist try to talk to Jack Frost with Black Frost in their stock, Black Frost will initiate a special conversation with Jack Frost, causing Jack Frost to run away.
Conversation
[Black Frost stepped forward and began talking to a demon!]
Black Frost:
Ho-yeah! We get a fellow frost here-ho!
Jack Frost:
Hee-hoho? You friendly-ho? You see-hee-m kinda different... You're black as night, ho!
Black Frost:
Ho-yeah, I am! I'm Black Frost, ho! I'm a super rad, super bad Frost that's mastered the way of hee-vil, ho!
Jack Frost:
Hee-hoho! You're so majestic, ho!
Black Frost:
And you're as white as snow, ho! All inn-ho-cent, unlike me! How about it, ho? Feel like breakin' a few rules, ho?
Jack Frost:
Hee-hohoho... I guess that sounds kinda fun, ho.
Black Frost:
Ho-yeah! Then allow me-hee to show you the ropes, ho!
Jack Frost:
Hee-ho! W-Where do we start, ho?
Black Frost:
Hee-hohoho... Well, for starters... Next time you buy milk, swipe the freshest one that's way in the back, ho!
Jack Frost:
Hee-ho! That's straight up e-hee-vil, ho!
Black Frost:
Think you can do that, ho?
Jack Frost:
I... I don't think so, ho!
Black Frost:
Hee-ho! What a wimp, ho! You and that silly blue hat of yours! Ho away!
Jack Frost:
Hee-ho-hooooo!
[The demon left shuddering...]

Soul Hackers 2[]
"A Jack Frost that grew powerful and evil. These are the evolved form of the fairly peaceful winter fairy and mark the transformation from small prankster into massively powerful entity."
—Soul Hackers 2 demon info
Black Frost is a demon of the Jaki race, and can be unlocked for fusion after defeating Kudlak in Night of the Living Snowman. The Kudlak had locked up Black Frost and thrown away the key, knowing that the Black Frost had been stopped years earlier for rampaging by members of Yatagarasu. The Black Frost thanks Ringo profusely after being freed, able to continue watching Black Frost: The Movie once again. He becomes available for fusion from this point forward, and can be summoned at the Cirque du Goumaden through a special fusion of King Frost, B Hawaii Frost, Melon Frost, Lemon Frost, Milk-kin Frost and Strawberry Frost.
Persona 3[]
"A Jack Frost that wished for evil powers. This powerful demon is born when a cute Jack Frost remembers its nature as a demon."
—Persona 3 FES background
Black Frost is a Persona of the Fool Arcana, his fusion prerequisite requires the protagonist to perform the cross-spread fusion of Jack Frost, Pyro Jack, King Frost and Queen Mab.
Elizabeth requires the creation of a Black Frost in one of her requests. Due to requiring a special fusion, Black Frost may not be fused until 9/21 or later.
Reload[]
"A Jack Frost that wished for evil powers. This powerful demon is born when a cute Jack Frost remembers its nature as a demon."
—Persona 3 Reload background
Black Frost is a Persona of the Fool Arcana and can be summoned through special fusion once the protagonist has reached level 37. His fusion recipe includes Jack Frost, Jack-o'-Lantern and King Frost.
Persona 4[]
"A Jack Frost that wished for evil powers. This powerful demon is born when a cute Jack Frost remembers its nature as a demon."
—Persona 4 compendium
Black Frost returns as a Persona of the Fool Arcana in Persona 4. His fusion prerequisite requires the protagonist to perform a pentagon spread fusion in the Velvet Room, with the Personas consisting of Jack Frost, Pyro Jack, King Frost, Pixie and Ghoul.
Moreover, one of Margaret's requests for her Social Link involves creating a Black Frost with the skill Auto-Sukukaja. This can be accomplished by fusing an Auto-Sukukaja version of either King Frost or Pyro Jack as part of the pentagon spread.
An Auto-Sukukaja version of King Frost may be created by using the fusion of a level 20 Anzu with a Lilim.
An Auto-Sukukaja version of Pyro Jack may be created by using the fusion of a level 35 Ose and an Oni.
After a successful fusion, Margaret relates Black Frost's story: Originally the only creature on his world, he prayed to his deity for a companion but was granted one for only a day. After his friend left, he was filled with such sadness and anger that he realized he never should have asked for a friend. At this point, Margaret warns you not to trust any story just because of who tells it. She also accidentally mispronounces the Persona's name as "Block Frost."
The Persona can be an extremely powerful ally early in the game, for that combining Blaze Vow, status buffs and Mind Charge with Agidyne, Black Frost is easily capable of dealing in excess of 700 to even 1,000 damage at high enough levels, making many difficult fights, and indeed boss battles, a matter of time.
Black Frost is the first special fusion Persona, all of which are initially hidden from the compendium. He can be created by fusing Jack Frost, King Frost and Pyro Jack and possess the unique skill, Icy Paradise.
Persona 5[]
"A Jack Frost that yearned for evil. This powerful demon is born when a cute Jack Frost remembers its nature as a demon."
—Persona 5 background
Black Frost is the tenth Persona of the Fool Arcana and initially appears as a boss, being the form that Yoshimori Sakoda takes in Mementos to confront the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. After he is defeated, he drops the Evil Snow Crystal key item, which will allow Black Frost to be summoned through fusion in the Velvet Room. He can be summoned once the protagonist reaches Lv.67 and uses advanced fusion to fuse Jack-o'-Lantern, Jack Frost and King Frost into Black Frost. Itemizing Black Frost through Electric Chair execution yields the Naraka Whip for Ann Takamaki, with 252 ATK, 90 ACC and the +Freeze (high) effect.
Royal[]
A Black Frost Doll can be won from the crane game at the Gigolo Arcade found in Akihabara starting from December 15 after the Sheep Man Doll has been obtained in a previous day.
During a fusion alarm, Black Frost will yield the Dainaraka Whip for Ann, with 320 ATK, 90 ACC and the +Freeze (high) effect, it is the strongest weapon in the game for her.
Black Frost is the ultimate Persona of the Fool Arcana and one of the game's eight unlockable fusions. Black Frost is encountered as a Shadow titled the "Fallen Snowman" during the "Halt the Strutting Little Imp" request given by Oracle. Black Frost will be found near the entrance of the Shibuya Jail at Shibuya Crossing. During the battle, the Fallen Snowman will frequently use a rapid-fire snowball attack, ended with a huge snowball, to strike at the active member of the party and also a charging lunge attack. These can be avoided with the help of the lamp posts and buses in the battle area. The rest of his skills will ignore cover in the area and must be outrun, or jumped over, as Black Frost's Bufudyne skill travels in a shockwave along the ground from where he lands. Black Frost's Evil Smile skill appears as a dark swirling spot on the ground that follows its target and triggers the Fear status effect when it explodes. However, if the player lures the spot over to Black Frost, the clumsy demon will inflict himself as well. This can make the fight a bit easier.
Defeating the Fallen Snowman will result in the party being given the Evil Snow Crystal upon completing the request. This will allow Black Frost to be fused in the Velvet Room through a triad fusion of a level 45 Jack Frost, level 45 Jack-o'-Lantern and a level 65 King Frost. Black Frost is one of the five Personas required for the fusion of the game's final Persona, Lucifer, during New Game+.
Devil Survivor[]
A Black Frost is a character in the game. He first appears as a Jack Frost in an event with Midori on day 3 in which he learns about the power of love. This knowledge incites him to become Black Frost.
If the protagonist chooses to save Keisuke via persuading him instead of defeating Yama, this will cause Midori to leave their party, and they won't be able to get Black Frost as a companion. Later on, Kaido and Midori will confront Keisuke, and Midori will summon Black Frost to fight alongside her. He is Level 55 and innately reflects fire and ice spells. If the player doesn't fight him, he will leave once Midori's COMP is destroyed.
If the player chooses to save Keisuke by defeating Yama, he makes an appearance on day 6 defending a group of low level demons from humans. Should the party choose to help him, he will automatically join on Day 7 on Gin's and Naoya's endings. However, during Gin's ending when the party fights Babel and initiates Haru's song to remove all demons, Black Frost will disappear along with the demons in the human characters' parties.
On Day 8 of the Overlord ending, he is the only leader who will follow the hero to the demon world due to him being the only demon leader in the group.
Black Frost is the only party member in Devil Survivor to have natural elemental weakness and strengths because of his non-human nature. Using Nullify/Reflect passive abilities on his weak attributes can make him invincible to anything but Almighty damage.
Devil Survivor 2[]
"A Jack Frost that grew powerful and evil through endless training as a demon. It was once a peaceable prankster of a winter fairy, but it has become massively powerful, strong enough to earn the title of overlord."
—Devil Survivor 2 compendium
If the protagonist defeated Botis on 3rd Day and Bifrons while saving Otome during the 5th Day, the Anguished One summons Black Frost in their place to do battle with the party on the Last Day to test their power. He calls himself a "messenger of love and justice" and delivers "magical punishment," serving as a callback to Devil Survivor's playable Black Frost. The player can even pick up on this and respond with "Frosty!" but the Black Frost will tell the player that he is mistaking him for someone else.
Defeating Black Frost unlocks him for fusion in the Cathedral of Shadows. He is the strongest member of the Jaki race.
The Animation[]
Black Frost makes a rather grand appearance in the animation, being summoned at the last-minute by Daichi Shijima during the final stages of the battle against Benetnasch. According to Makoto Sako, it seems to be the most powerful demon summoned in the series, its power and size far surpassing even Yamato Hotsuin's, Hibiki's, and Makoto's own demons.
While previous demons have struggled against Benetnasch, Black Frost damages it significantly by trapping and impaling the Septentrion with several Bufudynes. Black Frost even takes Phecda's deadly beam with ease, only flinching at its contact rather than being obliterated immediately unlike other demons. It delivers its final blow to the remaining Benetnasch parts with a powerful punch (reminiscent of the original Jack Frost's comedic signature punch).
In the final day, Daichi summons Black Frost once last time to hold back Zaou-Gongen, allowing Hibiki to reach the altar and ascend to Polaris' throne. Black Frost is soon consumed by the void with the rest of everything.
Black Frost has decent Strength and Magic growths, although this comes at the cost of his Vitality and Agility. His Strength and Magic are also rather average compared to other demon tamers at similar levels. With a movement range of 3 and speed of 50, he also cannot cover a lot of ground very often. Black Frost's availability is also limited, requiring the player to select a certain time event on Day 3 in addition to certain routes.
However, his main draw is his innate element affinities, which the other demon tamers do not have. He reflects Fire and Ice attacks, though he has a weakness to Force attacks, which can easily be fixed by using a passive skill that nulls, drains or reflects Force. On top of this, he can also use null/drain/repel skills for Phys and Elec to become completely invincible against all attacks except for Pierce physical attacks (which can be ignored with Phys Repel) and Almighty attacks, making him ridiculously difficult to take down.
If the player chooses to side with Keisuke instead of confronting him, Midori leaves the party. Later, she shows up alongside Kaido, and summons Black Frost to help her.
If the player viewed the event where Midori teaches a Jack Frost about the "power of love," an event appears here, where Black Frost steps in to defend demons that are being harassed by demon tamers. Helping him here will cause Black Frost to join the protagonist's party on the 7th Day of either Naoya's or Gin's endings.
Black Frost appears to battle on the Last Day if the player has defeated Botis and Bifrons (or not, in which case Botis and Bifrons will be fought as well) earlier in the week and has chosen not to side with the Anguished One.
