History[]
Deirdre, also known as Derdriu or more often called "Deirdre of the Sorrows," is a tragic figure in Celtic mythology. She was the daughter of the royal storyteller. Before she was born, the chief druid of King Conchobar of Ulster prophesied that she would be very beautiful, but that wars would occur, blood would spill, and three of Ulster's greatest warriors would be exiled over her. Hearing of her beauty lead the king to choose not to kill her and instead marry her when she was old enough and thus took her from her family to be raised from them by an old woman.
Eventually, she would meet the handsome Naoise, which eventually leads to the two eloping and being joined by Naoise's brothers to live in Scotland for a time and enjoy a peaceful life. However, they were being hunted down by the humiliated Conchobar. Eventually, he would force Deirdre to his side as the three brothers are killed. She would show no love and only coldness later to Conchobar who then planned to give her to the man who killed Naoise. Different versions of the myth happen at this point as she dies from despair or throws herself from the chariot and dies when her head is smashed against the rocks.
