Maitreya is a demon in Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse. He is one of the leaders of the Divine Powers.
History[]
Maitreya Bodhisattva, also known as Metteyya or Ajita, is regarded as the fifth Buddha that will appear in the future of this world in Buddhist eschatology. The prophecy of the arrival of Maitreya refers to a time in the future when the dharma will have been forgotten by most on the terrestrial world and the people no longer practice Buddhism. Maitreya will appear on Earth in 5,670,000,000 years, achieve complete enlightenment, and teach the pure dharma. According to scriptures, Maitreya will be a successor to the present Buddha, Gautama Buddha.
Maitreya is typically pictured seated, with either both feet on the ground or crossed at the ankles, on a throne, waiting for his time. He is dressed in the clothes of either a bhikṣu (monk) or Indian royalty. As a bodhisattva, he would usually be standing and dressed in jewels. Usually he wears a small stupa in his headdress that represents the stupa with relics of Gautama Buddha to help him identify it when his turn comes to lay claim to his succession, and can be holding a dharmachakra resting on a lotus. A khata scarf is always tied around his waist as a girdle.

Doi's design for Maitreya draws inspiration from both Matsuko Deluxe, a Japanese columnist known for his cross-dressing stage persona and pro-gay remarks and sexuality, and this particular statue of Maitreya in the Kōryū-ji.
Profile[]
Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse[]
"Also known as Maitreya Bodhisattva. Said to be the successor to the current Buddha. Name means "loving-kindness". Currently resides in the Tusita Heaven. Will become Buddha in 5,670,000,000 years, during which he will lead many to salvation."
Maitreya has a strong distaste for attachments of any kind, loathing any and all forms of it, especially those who cling to others. Despite this attitude many of his actions are contradictory from aiding the Divine Powers and making humanity dependent on them for salvation, to working together in order to hold back and defeat enemies capable of stopping them.
Maitreya is one of the leaders of the Divine Powers. A master of sealing magic and a ruthless pragmatist, Maitreya defeated the Yuriko-obsessed Gaeans and converted the strong members to their cause in Tsukiji Konganji, forcing the weak into Ginza while Odin recruited the gods of different faiths across Tokyo. He takes Asahi hostage during their planned kidnapping of Flynn in front of Masakado's stone slab, threatening to kill her and knowing Flynn is too weak-hearted to let a human die before him. He is later seen in the planned assault on Tsukiji, where he knocks back Toki after Krishna becomes bored of the fighting.
Together with his Buddhist subordinates he reactivates the Tokugawa Mandala Domain to force humanity to embrace salvation and release Tokyo of the influence of foreign demons. He fights the group after Inanna Remnant is beaten in the fifth temple, where he meets his own death but warns that he will return through Inanna and Toki. He keeps his word in the Cosmic Egg, where his soul is placed within Inanna by Krishna to revive him. His revival allows him to reclaim his original power as a Buddha by becoming Mitra-Buddha.
Now having power over linking souls to the earth, Mitra-Buddha creates a seal that isolates the souls within the Cosmic Egg, preventing Dagda from ever being able to revive them unless it is undone. At the same time, Dagda would be unable to revive Nanashi while he is in the Cosmic Egg, so a death in the level is an instant game over.
The party confronts him on the 5th floor of the Cosmic Egg. Prior to confrontation, Mitra-Buddha reveals that the Flynn the cast knows is the reincarnation of the same individual who sacrificed himself to Masakado to form the Firmament, and that Nanashi is the reincarnation of Aquila.
After Mitra-Buddha's defeat, Toki reflects on the definitions of strength. She resolves to change for the better and awakens to a new power. Mitra-Buddha's seal also begins to fade, although its effects will still persist for the duration of the next floor of the Egg.
Strategy[]
During the battle after breaking the Tokugawa Mandala, Maitreya will attack mostly with Physical attacks, but will also use Bufudyne to exploit a weakness if a party member is weak to Ice skills. He will also occasionally use Dekaja to remove the party's stat buffs. Maitreya will also occasionally use Makajamaon to prevent the party from using skills. For most options to his questions, he will gain a boost equivalent to one casting of Tarukaja and Makakaja. Additionally, if his weakness is hit during the effects of Enlightenment, he will gain a boost equivalent to Luster Candy as well. Having access to the Dekaja skill or Dekaja Stones will reduce the threat he poses.

Mitra-Buddha[]
Despite having glaring weaknesses to Fire and Force, Mitra-Buddha's signature passive, Self-Righteous Vow, will boost all his stats whenever that weakness is struck, spelling a devastating counterattack should his weaknesses be exploited excessively without erasing the buffs. Should he land a critical hit or exploit an Ice weakness, he will follow up with Severe Judgment, an Almighty attack that gets much stronger if he is smirking. Very rarely, he might also use Illogical Rejection, which prevents his buffs from being erased at all. Prioritize Physical and Ice immunity, but be warned that he will bypass Tetrakarn with Tetra Break. Utilize Concentrate to more than double the damage done to him without recklessly buffing Mitra-Buddha too much.
