Plumes of Dusk (夕暮れの噴煙, Yūgure no fun'en) are key items in the Persona series.

Appearances[]

Profile[]

A Plume of Dusk is a crystalline substance named after its aesthetic similarity to feathers. It is noted to be vital, "similar to a living thing, yet different" as well as said to "exist in a state between mind and matter, mass and information", a description harkening back to that of the Velvet Room.

Persona 3[]

Plume of Dusk revival

The Plume of Dusk could be used to revive the protagonist.

The Plume of Dusk is an item that miraculously revives the protagonist and his party to full HP and SP upon his death. The player starts with ten Plumes when starting Easy mode or thirty Plumes in Beginner mode (Persona 3 Portable), though another can be gained through one of Elizabeth's requests in Persona 3 FES. The Plumes are not present in the 2023 ports, being replaced with separate settings for resurrecting the party (reviving it either in the battle itself or at the start of the current stage) as many times as necessary.

Persona 3 Club Book[]

The Persona 3 Club Book explains that Plumes of Dusk are fragments of Nyx's body that were shed when Nyx's body fused with the moon. They exist in a state between matter and information, having properties of both, and carry within them the same space-time manipulation ability as Shadows - they are essentially physical Shadows. Plumes of Dusk are what allow Mitsuru Kirijo's motorcycle, Evokers, and the Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapons to function during the Dark Hour, and, in the case of the Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapons, allow them to have a psyche and act as their power source. The Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapons carry within their Personality Module two equally-sized Plumes, crossed in the shape of a butterfly, which is why they are called "Papillon Hearts."

The Kirijo Group's Shadow Research began when Kouetsu Kirijo came into possession of one of these Plumes. Through researching it, they learned of the existence of Nyx, which led Kouetsu and other researchers to become obsessed with the idea of the Fall and how to artificially facilitate it.

Persona 4 Arena[]

It is revealed that the Plumes of Dusk are primarily used in the cores of the personality modules of the robotic Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapons in order to grant an awareness from which they can summon a Persona. Earlier models such as those in the twenties and below (such as Unit #024) had lesser sized Plumes of Dusk while later models, like Labrys, had full-sized Plumes of Dusk.[1] Due to having full-sized Plumes of Dusk, it is speculated by the scientists in the intro of Labrys' story that such robots will develop their personalities faster when Labrys speaks in an accent immediately upon awakening.

When Aigis sees Labyrs’s memories she claims the Plume of Dusk is akin to a black box, being able to retain information in a similar manner.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax[]

Sho Minazuki has a Plume of Dusk implanted in him, which was put there by Shuji Ikutsuki in order to have him develop a Persona. Sho failed to develop one, however, and a new entity was born within him. This entity came to be known as Minazuki and considered himself Sho's protector. Minazuki understood that it was born from death. In the ending, the Plume of Dusk passes on Minazuki's Persona Tsukiyomi to Sho after he disappears and from that point on his eyes and scar glow blue.

Trivia[]

Proof of Nyx Wing filename

The Plume of Dusk is referred to as Nyx's Wing

  • In Persona 4 Arena, the file name for the Plume of Dusk image contains the words "nyx_wing", referring to the fact that they originate from Nyx.
  • Although the item doesn't appear in Persona 5, the item can be found in the game's code.[2]
