As we now have {{kana}} which stores romaji inside the abbr of the original Japanese name, should we do the same for {{Gamebox}} and {{Charbox}}? Because romaji feels redundant in most case. -- Inpursuit (talk) 15:10, February 27, 2015 (UTC)
- I would like for us to reverse that policy and display the romaji for those not in the know. You and I might know Japanese and think it's redundant, but there are those who don't and it is helpful as it acts as a transliteration guide. BLUER一番 16:18, February 27, 2015 (UTC)
- its mostly just a stylistic choice, having the romaji (essentially the pronunciations) placed in an abbr. whether its displayed right next to it or only visible on a mouse-over, its still effectively the same. regardless of which style is used, the kana template should still be used because then they can all be changed at once instead of having to do thousands of pages individually. since i'm the one that started putting them in abbr titles, my vote for which style to use doesn't really count; i think we should get input from casual users of the wiki to see which style they think is better though, but getting people to weigh in seems to be pretty difficult. maybe a poll would be the best way to find out? - I do agree that we should use the Kana template because it provides consistent format. But I'd compare hiding romaji in abbr to hiding IPA pronunciations and not useful for users who want to find out how to pronounce the Japanese term. It's also more of a technical choice than a stylistic choice: the tooltip takes about a second to render the abbr text out, as compared to having the romaji text written beside it. It would be useful for sites that heavily use Japanese characters ie. hovering the cursor over a kanji character normally renders a tooltip displaying the kana pronunciation. Abbr is useful for little notes and, of course, abbreviations ie. in stats, but imho not good for the Kana template.
- I would put a poll, but I rather want to read on opinions instead. It's more useful for when there's a need to amend the Manual of Style - which by the way already outlined the style for Japanese terms. BLUER一番 07:13, March 11, 2015 (UTC)
