You know that Chaos is partly about demons and Lucifer rebelling against God, right? So then why are gods known to slay demons and 'destroy evil' in that alignment?

Examples:

  • Shouki: Is in the Chaos-aligned Kishin and is known as a slayer of demons and evil.
  • Mahakala: Usually Chaos-aligned. Part of his Compendium description says he "repels evil".
  • Kartikeya: Fury clan. He is said to have defeated the forces of Asura. You know, the guy who lead the Chaos forces in Shin Megami Tensei? His article here states him as symbolic of opposing vices such as sex, anger, passion, and ego (among others).
  • Some of the Kishin consist of protectors of Buddhist law and destroy demons.

Why are gods like those Chaos-aligned? GalaxiaWild (talk) 20:24, April 4, 2013 (UTC)

I believe the reason for this has to do with the fact Buddhism is about breaking the cycle that humans are trapped in. Concerning Kartikeya, war gods usually get thrown in as Chaos demons. --63.249.110.97 22:08, April 4, 2013 (UTC)

What does the breaking the cycle in Buddhism have to do with Chaos in Shin Megami Tensei? GalaxiaWild (talk) 22:09, April 4, 2013 (UTC)

Breaking the Cycle in Buddhism refers to attaining enlightenment and finally transcending the boundaries of samsara, the circle of reincarnation, to finally seek peace and never to return to the world which is seen to cause suffering and misery. In this case, Law is seen to be the darkness that captures all in torment and despair, and Chaos is what you get if you can break its bounds.

When it comes to Chaos, when Chaos is taken in its light, modest way, Chaos comes to mean freedom and flexibility, not only for yourself, but for others as well. Chaos in this sense means that while there are rules, they are figureheads which all individuals should come to their own conclusions, while also expecting the best out of other individual in this world that they live in.

Just because that Lucifer is the lead does not mean that the conflict will end should Chaos win the war between them and YHWH, nor does it mean devil worshiping in its entirety. That's its symbolism to the criticism of religious systems in its entirety- Do not get confused with its artistic meaning.
