The name "Megami Tensei", or "Goddess Reincarnation", is in the title of most the games and is part of the title of the whole series. There can't not be a reason for the title. In the first Megami Tensei, the main female character, Yumiko Shirasagi, is a reincarnation of Izanami, and it isn't exactly subtle. In the first Shin Megami Tensei, the protagonist and the heroine are implied to be reincarnations of Adam and Eve of Biblical lore (they aren't techincally deities but still). - After the original Megami Tensei, it kinda become a artifact title. MTII and the first three SMT games tried to psuedo-justify it by having a prominent female character, but other games have pretty much stopped trying to justify the title. Think of it this way, the first game was a licensed game based on the first book and its OVA (though it actually draws from Warrior of the Demon City just as well as Reincarnation of the Goddess, and its plot takes place after both of them), the second game was a sequel to the first one, and SMT was a reboot for the Super Famicom. By then, they couldn't drop the name, as it had become a series far more popular and prominent than the novel it was licensed from. Maybe there was a reason why they wanted to keep the name after they stopped actually using the license? I don't know.--Otherarrow 01:35, March 3, 2012 (UTC)
- I'd agree. After all, the Megami Tensei has since been recognized to be associated with demon summoning et al. The Japanese side of Atlus had dropped Megami Tensei from most of the "demon summoning" games, if I'm not mistaken but the American side continues to use Shin Megami Tensei to associate them together.
