Physical (物理, Butsuri)? is a recurring element in the series. Physical is a Strength-based attack that can be performed either through Skills or standard melee attacks, with or without weapons at hand.
In most entries in the series, unlike Magic skills, Physical Skills sacrifice a set percentage of the user's total HP to perform in compensation, rather than SP/MP.

In certain games, Physical Skills have subcategories of ways to attack, and may be reflected on a demon's affinity chart.
- Gun Skills: Skills that utilize projectiles much like a gun or arrow.
- Slash Skills: Skills that emulate the cutting ability of a sword or axe.
- Strike Skills: Skills that emulate strong bludgeoning power akin to a hammer or club.
- Pierce Skills: Skills that emulate the piercing might of a spear or knife (or a bullet, if Gun Skills are excluded).

- The Slash/Strike/Pierce mechanic can be seen as a precursor to the Weapon Triangle mechanic from the Fire Emblem franchise, as Shin Megami Tensei II, the first game in the Megami Tensei franchise to utilize this specific combat mechanic, was released two years (1994) before Genealogy of the Holy War (1996), the first FE game to earnestly use this mechanic.
