{{Quote|Let's be honest. There's nothing great about the real world, is there? It's just dull and annoying as hell. No one accepts that's the way things are... They're just stuck with it because they can't deny it, either. Those who actually succeed in life... They just happen to be born with the magic ticket called "talent." If you don't have it, you can either accept or deny that fact until you die. That's your only choice. Once you realize that, all you have left in life is despair. The ultimate game over.
A cheerful and jovial detective, Adachi often serves as the story's comic relief. He jokingly refers to himself as the 'slave' of Dojima, complaining of the workload that his partner piles on him. Adachi also often accidentally (and sometimes purposely) blurts out the police investigation results to the Investigation Team, much to his own chagrin. He can be seen hanging around Junes Department Store, usually planning to buy cabbages to cook for dinner. His actions in public hide his normal thoughts and desires however.

  +
Adachi seems to be a cheerful and jovial detective displaying textbook incompetence, such as threatening to throw up upon being asked to investigate a murder scene. He is outright treated as comic relief, due to his irresponsible and slacking nature. He also tends to make terrible unfunny jokes and puns that only he would enjoy. He jokingly refers to himself as Dojima's slave, complaining about the workload that his partner piles on him. Adachi is shown to be rather lazy, even encouraging Nanako to take shortcuts in her homework. Adachi also often accidentally (and sometimes purposely) blurts out the police investigation results to the Investigation Team, much to his own chagrin. He can be seen hanging around the Junes Department Store, usually "killing time."
  +
  +
This stems from when he was younger, his parents only cared about his grades in school, resulting in an aloof upbringing without many friends. Due to the hard work in his youth, Adachi feels that he should be entitled to success in life, although he was kicked to Inaba to become Dojima's assistant due to incompetence or in Adachi's own words, a "botched job." Adachi grew bored of the life he lived in the quiet country town of Inaba, which he describes as "Nowheresville," since he was often pressured by Dojima and didn't have much income, having to resort to having daily meals of boiled cabbage to the point that he was bored and disgusted by its taste. He ultimately grew to resent the "reality" of a society that he felt boxed him in and desired a means to escape it. This motivated him to enroll in Izanami's cat-and-mouse game and unleash a series of bizarre murders to relieve his stress in Inaba. In contrast to the protagonists who successfully quell the violent aspects of their Shadows (with the exception of the Bad Ending that leads to them killing Namatame), Adachi freely acts out his murderous impulses and postulates that the Shadow Selves that emerged from the Investigation Team were enjoying life far more than their real counterparts. Even then, Adachi is able to properly facade his true nature via his responsibilities as a cop, while his lazy and bumbling personality expresses his reluctancy and inability to play said role, even if it's at his expense.
  +
  +

  +
Regarding his relationships with the people around him, Adachi does not seem keen on hanging around or depending on others, believing that true freedom lies in solitude. Being treated with empathy and kindness confuses and annoys him, due to his lack of friends in his youth. He has a lack of empathy for others, whether it be his victims or their loved ones, and encourages the protagonist to adopt a similar mindset to look out for oneself. Should he personally confront Adachi, the latter would only refute that it was his decision to befriend Adachi that betrayed him, rather than Adachi himself. He is also prone to lose his temper when people happen to wound his ego or oppose his ideals, resulting in him performing cruel actions on an impulse such as murdering Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi, and attacking the Investigation Team when his Shadow overruns him. Despite this, Adachi does express in his letter to the protagonist fondness for his life with the Dojimas, showing that he does have some appreciation for the values of friendship that he often scoffs at. Whenever Adachi upsets Nanako by antagonizing the protagonist, he would try to uplift her spirits, as shown by performing a magic trick for her.

  +
Although having faced the truth like the others, he would be left with nothing but a sense of despair from his inability to change anything, due to society's inept nature, as the truth they believe in is merely a social construct built on rumors. Adachi has chosen to look away from the truth, leading to his misanthropic, fraudulent, manipulative and mocking personality, but ultimately delusional worldview, confusing himself as a man "favored by the world." The main difference between Adachi and the others who have awakened to their Persona is that he acted alone, and the lack of any meaningful relationships in his life was what caused him to develop his Persona.
  +
  +
However, he becomes especially abrasive whenever faced with reality even if temporarily, such as when both Mayumi and Saki rejected him, or even when the Investigation Team banded together to force feed him with the truth. He even becomes a poor actor as soon as Nanako's hospitalized, as he shows no signs of genuine sympathy towards the girl's death, and when he's actively trying to cover his tracks near the very end, the best excuse he has for transporting Namatame to keep him from talking, was to present himself as an uncharacteristically dedicated detective. He would later make up fake excuses to hide from the truth, insisting that Mayumi and Saki "betrayed" him, and would try to confuse the Investigation Team by dodging the blame and accusing them of being hypocrites.
  +
  +
After Ameno-sagiri's defeat, Adachi accepts his defeat and willingly returns to the real world to answer for his crimes. In Golden, should his Social Link with the protagonist have been ranked up accordingly, he acknowledges that had he been more like the protagonist and his friends, his life would have been much more fortunate. He was also surprised to hear Dojima was still considerate of him as a partner regardless, proven by having been carefully hospitalized before being put into custody on Dojima's request.
  +
  +
In Persona 4 Golden and the new Social Link, Adachi's been humanized through his genuine relationship with the protagonist as well as giving background to his situation. Regardless of whether Adachi himself wishes to live a social life or not, he is made to keep a distance by force, as Dojima himself scolds Adachi back to work while simultaneously apologizing to the protagonist in Adachi's name, putting an intervention to their bond by excluding Adachi. Later, when Adachi is revealed to be the killer, the protagonist's bond with Adachi is again divided by the Investigation Team, and the protagonist may only try to talk things through with Adachi in secret, which would only sadden Yosuke later, having felt like he doesn't completely trust them.

  +
Even then, in spite of all roadblocks, the protagonist's attempts to get through to Adachi are a lost cause as Adachi himself has given up on trying to fit in society, refusing to listen to even the protagonist in spite of implications that he does still care. If the protagonist decides to take matters into his own hands and protect Adachi, he would have become twisted enough to blackmail him into silence, should he also decide to burn decisive evidence to protect him, making him his accomplice. Again, Adachi simply gave up on trying to fit in.
It turns out that he is the one behind the mysterious murders of Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi. Once the truth is revealed, he shows his true colors as a sadistic, misogynistic, misanthropic, and manipulative man, seeking to have fun. He already knew how dangerous the world inside the TV was, and threw Yamano into it anyway. He manipulated Taro Namatame into "saving" the next victim before the murderer could get to her, all while hiding the truth that he was behind the first two cases. He even said that he got a real kick out of it when he threw that "Kubo kid" into the TV. He acts as if everything was a game, and watched the events unfold. He doesn't seem to care about the consequence of his actions. He also believes that there was nothing great about the real world. It was just "dull and annoying as hell" to him.

Later, in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, although he still taunts the cast as he used to, he appears to have been greatly influenced by the Investigation Team; he is very adamant in trying to atone for his past sins and feels that his atonement will mean nothing if someone else dies in the TV World (even himself). He even goes so far as to trying to destroy the Persona Fragments that Sho collected to stop his plans and even openly challenges Hi-No-Kagutsuchi to a fight, showing an immense amount of selflessness he never would've displayed in the past. In addition, although he doesn't admit it, he genuinely values his friendship with Dojima, briefly becoming angry when the interrogator called Dojima a dirty cop and later smiling at how Dojima came to visit him in prison.

  +
Later, in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, he retains his habit of taunting the cast, but also retains his cheerful, nonchalant attitude. The actions of the Investigation Team appear to have made an impact on him as well; he is very adamant in trying to atone for his past crimes and shows an immense amount of selflessness by attempting to destroy the Persona Fragments that Sho had collected and assisting Yu in defeating Hinokagutsuchi. In addition, although Adachi won't admit it out loud, he genuinely values his friendship with Dojima, smiling when Dojima came to visit him in prison and almost losing his temper when the middle-aged detective began insulting him.

When he was a child, Adachi's parents wanted him to be successful and only cared about his grades. When he grew up, he enrolled in the police force merely to be allowed to carry a gun. However, due to a mistake, he was dispatched to Inaba to become Ryotaro Dojima's assistant detective, leading to him finding life in the town boring enough to resent it. Dojima welcomed him as a partner, but didn't treat him with high regard due to his professional incompetence. He also didn't have much income, so he had to eat boiled cabbage almost daily.
Throughout the story, Adachi is portrayed as a textbook lousy detective — he makes rookie mistakes, vomits at the sight of grisly murders, and is seemingly unable to keep his mouth shut about the murder cases to anybody he speaks with, regardless of their involvement (or lack thereof) in the investigation. Throughout the story, Adachi gives the Investigation Team hints and updates regarding the murder cases' current status, which often influence the action the Investigation Team later takes.

  +
However, an opportunity to relieve his stress and boredom arose when he realized he could put his hand through the TV, unknown to him that it was from meeting the master of the collective unconsciousness disguised as a Moel Gas Station Attendant, who gave him a handshake and therefore granted him the power to enter the TV World. When the scandal between Misuzu Hiiragi, Mayumi Yamano and Taro Namatame broke, Adachi was assigned to protect Yamano, residing in the Amagi Inn to avoid media coverage, intriguing him since he had seen Yamano on the TV after hearing the Midnight Channel's rumors of showing the watcher's soulmate. When she denied giving him information about being involved with the affair, it provoked Adachi to push her into the TV in a fit of rage without planning to, resulting in her corpse being found a few days later in the real world after being attacked by Shadows, leaving Taro Namatame grief-stricken when he had seen her on the Midnight Channel beforehand. When Adachi was asked to question Saki, a student of Yasogami High School acquainted with Yosuke Hanamura and the one who discovered Yamano's corpse, he took the opportunity to make advances on her after accusing her of an affair with Namatame. When she vehemently refused and slapped him, Adachi was again irritated by being rejected, and deliberately threw her into the TV this time, leading to her death and body discovery in the same manner as Yamano's.
During Nanako's time in the hospital, and immediately following her death, Adachi remains oddly collected. He points the group in the direction of Taro Namatame's room in the same hospital, and the group finds Namatame (the Team's primary suspect of the bizarre murder cases) attempting to escape the hospital. Should the Protagonist manage to stay calm and make the correct decision not to kill Taro Namatame, the Normal Ending is unlocked. The Investigation Team, upon further questioning of Namatame, realizes a horrid truth: everything they've deduced was the direct opposite. Namatame stayed true to his words — he was trying to 'save' the victims, but was merely misdirected. Although he did trap Yukiko, Kanji, Rise, and Naoto, he did not kill Mayumi Yamano nor Saki Konishi, the first two victims.

  +
Namatame, who was terrified by the double homicide, contacted the police about what to do. Since no other officer would believe his testimonies and Adachi happened to be the only officer available (the others were being kept busy by the bizarre murders), he was able to manipulate Namatame. He did not know Adachi's true involvement behind the last two murders. Adachi told Namatame to put people who had been covered by the media inside a "safe place" where nobody can find them. Namatame, who had also found out about the TV World, believed it would be the safest place for them, as he thought that Yukiko was "smiling inside the TV." As a result, he started pushing people who were covered heavily by the media into TVs in order to prevent their murders. Unfortunately, this is exactly what puts their lives at risk, so Namatame was unwittingly playing into Adachi's plan. Adachi will usually perform murders through Namatame via this way for most of the investigation, although he directly put Mitsuo Kubo into the TV as an act of sadism, since Mitsuo was nihilistic enough to copycat him for a sense of recognition.
As the Investigation Team investigates further into the bizarre murder cases and the secret behind the Midnight Channel, they come up with bits of evidence and clues about the truth behind the murders, and find that Adachi has strong evidence of being the murderer.

  +
Throughout the investigation, Adachi is portrayed as a textbook lousy detective: he makes rookie mistakes, vomits at the sight of grisly murders and is seemingly unable to keep his mouth shut about the murder cases to anybody he speaks with, regardless of their involvement (or lack thereof) in the investigation. Throughout the story, Adachi gives the Investigation Team hints and updates regarding the murder cases' current status, which often influence the actions the Investigation Team later takes.
Realizing this, the Team is informed that Namatame is going to have his transportation and rush to the Hospital, where they trick Adachi into accidentally revealing his connection with the murder cases. In an act of desperation, Adachi runs away from them and enters the Midnight Channel as his final escape.

  +
After Yukiko Amagi, Kanji Tatsumi and Rise Kujikawa's abductions were all solved by the Investigation Team, Mitsuo went to the police station to confess to the murders of Mayumi and Saki out of sheer nihilism, in addition to murdering what seems to be a third victim, Kinshiro Morooka. In reality, Morooka was murdered manually by Mitsuo and not via Adachi's methods. Adachi's superiors were less than amused, and pawned Adachi off with the student. Since allowing Mitsuo to confess to the murders would effectively stop Namatame from continuing to kidnap the people appearing on TV and preventing Adachi from killing more people through him, and he couldn't bear to let his "game" of cat-and-mouse (a.k.a. his murder spree) end so quickly, he led Mitsuo to an interrogation room, turned the lights off and threw him into the Midnight Channel. Mitsuo was saved by the Investigation Team, but because Adachi turned off the lights in the interrogation room, he had no idea that Adachi was his assailant.
The Investigation Team tracks down Adachi, and find him within the very first area the Protagonist, Yosuke and Chie ended up in — Mayumi Yamano's dungeon. Upon finding Adachi, the detective reveals that he held a romantic interest towards Mayumi Yamano and used his job on the police force to be alone with Mayumi while she stayed in the Amagi Inn, telling the others that he was sent by to protect her from the media.

  +
After Naoto attempts in-person to bait the killer and was saved by (and joined) the Investigation Team, Adachi, irritated that the Investigation Team is getting in the way of his "game," sends an anonymous letter to the Dojima residence threatening the well-being of the protagonist's loved ones should he continue saving people. After Nanako is thrown into the TV, rescued by the protagonist and seemingly dying in the hospital, Adachi remains collected. He points the group in the direction of Taro Namatame's room in the same hospital when confronted about Dojima's whereabouts, where he was escorted by police guards despite forcing himself into Namatame's room. This allows the Investigation Team to enter Namatame's room to interrogate him.
When the two are alone in the inn's lobby, Adachi asks whether her affair with Namatame is real, which Mayumi brushes off and spurns his feelings. Enraged, Adachi pushes Mayumi back and accidentally drops her into the TV behind them. Since Adachi only tried inserting parts of his body into the TV before, he was surprised and amused to see that humans can actually enter the TV. After the incident, Mayumi ended up as the first victim, with Saki Konishi acting as witness.

  +
While the group lashes out at Namatame, what appears to be Namatame's Shadow Self appears on the TV to berate the team for preventing him from "saving" Nanako and that he is going to "save" as many people as he can if he is left alive, greatly enraging the Investigation Team. In reality, this was not Namatame's Shadow, but a false image manifested from the Investigation Team's subconscious eagerness to believe that he is the killer. Yosuke will then ask the protagonist a series of questions about how to dispose of Namatame. Agreeing to throw Namatame into the TV or making ambiguous statements will result in a bad ending; in either case, the mystery of Inaba remains unsolved. However, in the first variant, both Namatame and Nanako were officially deceased, while in the second variant, both remain alive, although Nanako was in critical condition and Namatame denied his crimes when being tried in court.
Adachi later questions Saki about her discovery of Mayumi's corpse. Through his questions, Adachi tries to seduce Saki, but Saki retaliates by slapping him. Having his feelings spurned once again, Adachi pushes Saki into the TV inside the Police Station's interrogation room. Since Saki's body was lighter and skinnier than Mayumi, Adachi was able to push her with ease. Boasting his accomplishment, Adachi remarks that he wasn't committing crimes, but merely establishing justice by killing those two "gold-diggers" hoping to swindle Namatame's money.

  +
If they successfully rule out Namatame as the killer, they investigate further into the case and come up with bits of evidence and clues, with the threatening letter being central. During the 5th of December, the protagonist must conclude that Adachi is the killer and tell it to his friends. Failure to guess the killer twice will result in the same bad ending as making ambiguous statements that lead to Nanako being in critical condition instead of dying. After realizing this, the team is informed that Namatame is going to have his transportation, and rush to the hospital, where they trick Adachi into accidentally revealing his connection with the murder cases. In an act of desperation, Adachi runs away from them and enters the Midnight Channel as his final escape.
When Namatame realized that every victim that was murdered first appeared on TV, he contacted the police- however, Adachi was the one who answered Namatame's call. Adachi then reveals that he was the one giving Namatame the idea of pushing the people who appeared on TV into the Midnight Channel (supposedly to save them from the murderer), and mocks Namatame's efforts, wondering aloud whether he was caught up in a messiah complex. When a student named Mitsuo Kubo came to the police station to confess to the murders of Mayumi and Saki, Adachi's superiors were less than amused, and pawned off Adachi off with the student.

Since allowing Mitsuo to confess to the murders would effectively stop Namatame from continuing to kidnap the people appearing on TV, and Adachi couldn't bear to let his "game" of cat-and-mouse end so quickly, he formulated a plan to lock Mitsuo into the Midnight Channel. His plans were, of course, foiled by the Investigation Team, but because Adachi turned off the lights in the interrogation room Mitsuo had no idea that Adachi was the one who pushed him in. When the Team finds him in the other world, Adachi comments that the 'game' would be boring if the Investigation Team were unable to track him down, and congratulates the Investigation Team in a mocking manner. The 'Adachi' talking to the Investigation Team in Mayumi's reality was revealed to be an illusion, and Rise and Teddie later found out that Adachi was already in his reality.
+
The Investigation Team tracks down Adachi, and finds him within the very first area the protagonist, Yosuke and Chie ended up in: Mayumi Yamano's dungeon. Upon finding Adachi, the detective exposes himself as the killer himself and explains every part of his involvement up until this point in an incredibly casual and apathetic manner, greatly unnerving the Investigation Team. He then comments that the "game" would be boring if they were unable to track him down, and mockingly congratulates them before vanishing, but not before revealing that the real world and the Midnight Channel will be fused together by the end of the year.

Adachi's ultimate goal was to create a large rift between the Midnight Channel and the Real World, allowing the fog to completely engulf the reality, making the world a place infested with shadows. Taunting the Team, Adachi escapes into his reality, and became surprised when the Team actually gives in to his taunts. Adachi calls the Team "losers", and wonders aloud why wouldn't they take life simpler by just studying, growing up, and getting through marriage.
+
The "Adachi" talking to the Investigation Team in Mayumi's reality was revealed to be an illusion, therefore Rise and Teddie later found out that Adachi was already in his reality, Magatsu Inaba. When exploring, his dialogue consists of taunts directed at the Team. He also wonders aloud why they wouldn't take life simpler by just studying, growing up and getting through marriage. It was revealed that his ultimate goal was to create a large rift between the Midnight Channel and the real world, allowing the fog to completely engulf reality and making the world a place infested with shadows.

  +
If Adachi isn't defeated by 12/24, all of Inaba will be completely covered in fog and overrun by shadows. Naoto will call the protagonist and tell him the situation before hearing her scream, supposedly being attacked by Shadows. The protagonist blacks out instantly afterwards, and is summoned to the Velvet Room where Igor offers him to go back a week earlier.
Adachi's dungeon inside the Midnight Channel Magatsu Inaba takes the form of a twisted maze, covered in yellow police tape, potholes, and signposts. Upon reaching the final floor, Adachi sarcastically gives the Team a round of applause. His justification for his actions is that humanity wants the world to be a place where there is no pain and no suffering, and should the world's population turn into Shadows, that dream could become a reality. Adachi also claims that he originally became a police officer just so he could carry a gun. He proceeds to express his disgust and contempt towards society, saying that everyone is condemned to live a life filled with boundaries — only the lucky few who are born with talent are able to get out, and everyone else is forced to either deny or accept the fact that they will never achieve their hopes and dreams.

Upon reaching the final floor of Magatsu Inaba, Adachi sarcastically congratulates the team and proceeds to express his disgust and contempt towards the world and society and supposedly justifies his actions by saying that if all of humanity are turned into Shadows, they would be given an easy life of no worries or despair. The Investigation Team, however, ignores and refutes Adachi's words one by one, until Adachi's temper reaches its peak to the point something starts to take over him and he attacks them, revealing his own Persona, Magatsu-Izanagi.
Ignoring Adachi's words, the Investigation Team engages Adachi in a fight. During battle, Adachi reveals that he can summon a Persona, with his Persona taking the form of none other than the Protagonist' initial Persona, Izanagi. However, unlike the Protagonist's, Adachi's variation of Izanagi takes the form of a bloodied, vein-covered and more malevolent form. After his defeat, it is revealed that Adachi was being controlled by an entity called Ameno-sagiri, who is the real mastermind behind Adachi's plans of filling the world with fog. However, Adachi himself expressed that it was also partially his true desire as well; and thus was not totally possessed by Ameno-sagiri, and is still to blame for the murders.

After his defeat, Adachi gets fully possessed by Ameno-sagiri, who was manipulating Adachi from within and was the real mastermind behind Adachi's plans of filling the world with fog. However, Adachi later expressed that it was also partially his true desire as well and he is still to blame for the murders. Upon Ameno-sagiri's defeat, Adachi questions the Team's reluctance to kill him, asking them if that wasn't their goal in pursuing him. The team replies that killing him would essentially continue the cycle. Surprised by the team's resolution, Adachi finally gives up and willingly follows the Team out the Midnight Channel.
Upon Adachi's defeat, he questions the Team's reluctance of killing him, asking them wasn't that their initial goal of pursuing him, in which the Team replies that killing him would essentially continue the cycle: one dies; and shows up in the antenna the next day. Surprised by the Team's resolution, Adachi finally gives up, and willingly follows the Team out the Midnight Channel. Outside the Midnight Channel, upon the police's arrival, the Team was inquired that whether a stretcher would be necessary to carry out an exhausted Adachi, which reveals to be a personal favor of Ryotaro Dojima. Further surprised by the polices' exclamation, Adachi finally acknowledges that despite Ryotaro's strict orders towards him, Ryotaro still considers him as an assistant. Guilt-ridden and touched, Adachi swore to confess his crimes to the police, making full cooperation with them.

If the events of the True Ending Arc, which follows after Adachi's defeat, the Team receives a letter from the recently-convicted Adachi, stating his suspicions about there being a higher being orchestrating the entire thing. Unfortunately, he can only give vague clues at best — and tells the Protagonist it is up to him to solve the mystery.

In the events of the True Ending, the Team receives a letter from the recently-convicted Adachi, stating his suspicions about there being a higher being orchestrating the entire thing. However, he can only give vague clues at best; and tells the protagonist it is up to him to solve the mystery. It is revealed that his, the protagonist's and Namatame's ability to enter the Midnight Channel came from seemingly chance meetings with a Moel Gas Station Attendant the day they each arrived in Inaba.

In the enhanced port for the Vita, Adachi is a newly-added Social Link, associated with the new Jester Arcana. The link can be started as early as May. If the player reaches rank 6 on his Social Link, the player has the option of not revealing him as the killer, and later destroying evidence, thus letting him go free, or ignoring it and having him jailed.

  +
Persona 4 Golden
Over the course of the Jester Arcana, Adachi will mention a little bit about his life, and talk about how troubling some moments in life can be. He also attempts to hide from an old woman who brings him food everyday, and complains about how she's a bother, as well as how poorly her food seems to taste.

In the enhanced port for the Vita, Adachi is a newly-added Social Link, associated with the new Jester. The Social Link can be started as early as May. Said Social Link focuses on Adachi's dissatisfaction with life at the countryside.

  +
During early aspects of the Jester Arcana, Adachi spends time with the protagonist. Although especially lazy and sly with half-baking his work, Adachi talks about his past of studying as per meeting the expectations of his parents, and the difficulties he's experiencing in the workforce. Although social, Adachi has preference towards being alone.
If the player chooses to keep silent about Adachi being the prime suspect, they will be able to meet with Adachi prior to leaving, and confront him about being the killer. Adachi will act dumb, pretending not to know anything, and taunt the player, saying that even if he was the killer, there was no proof. The player is given the choice to side with Adachi, and destroy the threatening letter Adachi had secretly sent. Once he does, Adachi will laugh, ridiculing the player once again (as he had just betrayed both Dojima and his friends, going against the search for the true killer that they'd been doing the entire year). Pointing out that destroying evidence is a crime, he calls the protagonist and warns he'd be keeping tabs on him by calling him from his number. This maxes Adachi's Social Link as the Jester Arcana. Adachi leaves the interrogation room, mocking the player one last time with a simple "goodbye, partner."

  +
Meanwhile, he's also bothered by an unaffiliated old woman who he was reluctant to associate with in spite of his responsibility: although kind to him, she treated Adachi as a substitute for her son who was away from overseas for work, only having Adachi's first name in common. Though Adachi mostly complained about the old woman's terrible cooking and his laziness towards playing along, the story indirectly implies Adachi enjoys her company and felt sad when he was replaced.
The ending carries out like the Bad Ending, with the player leaving the foggy Inaba. However, after the credits, there is an additional scene where the player sees Adachi from behind as he's walking past the train. As Adachi grins, the protagonist will angrily clench his cell phone, as the train enters a dark tunnel.

  +
Meanwhile, after being invited over at the Dojima Residence by the protagonist, Adachi spends time with him and Nanako for dinner and to help with homework, acting like a genuine relative.
If the player chooses to reveal Adachi as the killer, the scene will play out like normal, with the exception that Rise will mention that Adachi seems to be waiting for the player after confronting him in the TV world. The player can then choose to confront him one last time by himself, or wait until everyone shows up.

  +
If the protagonist reaches Rank 6 of Adachi's Social Link, should he deduce he's the killer on December 5th, he has the option of not revealing him, in addition to later choosing to destroy evidence, thus letting him go free.
By confronting Adachi by himself, the player will head to the entrance of Magatsu Inaba, where Adachi will appear and playfully taunt the player, calling him a fool for coming alone and believing in the Adachi that he saw. Telling him to return with his friends after purposefully shooting the space right next to the player's ear, he will disappear, revealing the Jester Arcana to actually be the Hunger Arcana.

  +
Accomplice Ending
Should the player reach rank 9 and attempt the True Ending, the letter from Adachi will be the same as before, with a slight note at the end. Adachi will tell the player that after what happened, he feels differently about the time he spent with the player, Nanako, and Dojima. However, he still insults the player, calling him a dumbass, and tells him that he will follow his own path, like the player has followed his own.

If the protagonist chooses to keep silent about Adachi being the prime suspect on December 5th, they will be able to meet with him prior to the protagonist leaving in March and confront him about being the killer. Adachi plays innocent, pretending not to know anything, and taunts the protagonist, saying that even if he was the killer, there is no proof. In a long chain of dialogue options, if the protagonist is vague, Adachi leaves and the "neutral" bad ending (the same bad ending that happens when the protagonist fails to convince the party that Namatame is not the killer by ambiguous statements) is triggered.

  +
Otherwise, if the protagonist is direct with his interest in the case and is serious about siding with Adachi, Adachi will show him the blackmail letter and indirectly offer the protagonist to destroy it. If the protagonist chooses not to burn the letter, Adachi shrugs it off, saying he "didn't expect much else" as the protagonist is merely "playing detective after all." He tells the protagonist that he will send the letter over to forensics, and subtly threatens him, idly noting that he should be careful on his way home, as "you never know what might happen." The same bad ending as above will follow.
Upon maxing the Jester/Hunger Arcana before facing Izanami-no-Okami, Adachi will appear before the player, insulting him and reminding him that he would show Adachi the true difference between them.

  +

In the New Ending, Dojima mentions to the reunited Investigation Group that Adachi has become a model prisoner. Adachi says that he gets better treatment in prison than he had with Dojima. Dojima says he'll bring him a cheap cabbage whenever he'll visit again.

  +
  +
If the protagonist instead burns the letter, Adachi laughs, ridiculing the protagonist for betraying both his friends and his own values, having pursued the truth without realizing it is something that exists within the hearts of others in spite of its seemingly absolute nature. Pointing out that destroying evidence is a crime, he calls the protagonist's phone and warns that he'll be keeping tabs on him by calling him from his number, basically blackmailing the protagonist to preserve his silence. This maxes Adachi's Social Link as the Jester Arcana. Adachi leaves the interrogation room, mocking him one last time with a simple "goodbye, partner." The ending carries out like the Bad Ending, with the protagonist leaving the foggy Inaba. However, after the credits, there is an additional scene where the protagonist briefly spots Adachi from behind as he's walking past the train. As Adachi grins, the protagonist clenches his cell phone as the train enters a dark tunnel.
  +
  +
If the protagonist does not choose to visit Adachi at all before that, the protagonist will receive a call from Adachi before he leaves for the train station. Adachi merely calls to say he is being transferred overseas that day and will probably never see the protagonist again. He hangs up, and Dojima notes that the protagonist and Adachi must have been close if the latter decided to call the former on his last day in Japan.

On December 7th, the protagonist can then choose to confront him one last time by himself or wait until everyone else shows up. By confronting Adachi by himself, the protagonist heads to the entrance of Magatsu Inaba, where a fake Adachi appears and playfully taunts him for coming alone and believing in the Adachi that he saw. When the protagonist attempts to convince him otherwise, Adachi responds dismissively, saying that people like him piss him off the most. Telling him to return with his friends after purposely shooting the space right next to the protagonist's ear, Adachi disappears, revealing the Jester Arcana to actually be the Hunger Arcana.

As Magatsu-Inaba progresses and Adachi is defeated, the Hunger Arcana ranks up automatically and reaches Rank 9. During the True Ending, the letter from Adachi is amended with a slight note at the end, telling the protagonist that after what happened, he feels differently about the time he spent with him, Nanako and Dojima. He then tells him that he will follow his own path, like the protagonist has followed his own.
  +
  +
Upon maxing the Hunger Arcana, when Izanami-no-Okami uses Thousand Curses as a last-ditch attempt to kill the protagonist and his party without fail, Adachi appears before the protagonist, just like the other Social Links who were maxed before Izanami's confrontation.

In the new Golden epilogue, Dojima mentions to the reunited Investigation Team that Adachi has become a model prisoner. Adachi says that he gets better treatment in prison than he had with Dojima. Dojima says he'll bring him a cheap cabbage whenever he'll visit again.

In the first anime adaptation, Adachi's role remains mostly unchanged.

On May 18, while Adachi buys cabbages, he was seen spying on Yu and others at Tatsumi Textiles for information about Kanji. Then on June 27, he is seen in a police car with Mitsuo in handcuffs and another police officer taking him to the police department.

  +
During his confrontation with the Investigation Team in Magatsu Inaba, he leads them on a chase which causes Magatsu Inaba to manifest images of the past, as well as destroyed versions of various Inaba locations.
  +
  +
Yu finally locates the real Adachi in the ruins of the Dojima Residence, sitting at the family table with a full set of plates for everyone set out, just like the dinners he used to have together with the Dojima family. The two fight one on one, using their Personas. Adachi eventually uses an ability to bind both Yu and Izanagi, keeping them from moving. He plays around with and taunts Yu, shooting at him or stabbing his Persona, but never actually killing him when he has the chance.
  +
  +
Eventually, Yu breaks free, and he and the rest of the Investigation Team refute all of Adachi's words, defeating each Reaper as various illusions of Adachi start to turn static, crumble apart, and panic, screaming at all of them in rage. The rest of the Investigation Team members ridicule Adachi, but Yu also includes his own input, stating that Adachi was acting naive for thinking that he was the only one suffering in the world. Adachi's finally defeated when Izanagi bisects Magatsu-Izanagi in the torso before stabbing him in the head; all things Adachi himself felt the pain of as they happened.

After his defeat, Adachi attempts to commit suicide by shooting himself in the head, but is interrupted by Ameno-sagiri possessing his body. with his eyes resembling Ameno-sagiri's lens.

  +
After everything is over, Yu extends a hand to Adachi, telling him "let's go home." This action alone seems to have a huge effect on Adachi, as it implies Yu still views Adachi as someone close to their family despite everything that happened.
After being discovered at Mayumi Yamano's reality in the TV world, he did not fully explain how he killed the previous two victims. Instead, he leads separate members of the Seekers of Truth to different pasts where he killed them. He was finally located at the ruins of Yu's home at the Dojima Residence and faces off with Yu in battle with their Izanagis. During their battle, he continues to set traps for Yu and his Izanagi that prevent him from moving, leaving him with an advantage on taking him down. Adachi had Yu at gunpoint, but missed on purpose to scare him.

  +
Afterwards, while he is in prison, Adachi sends Yu and the Investigation team a letter, stating his suspicions about there being a higher being orchestrating the entire thing. But he can only give vague clues at best; and tells Yu it is up to him to solve the mystery.
After his defeat, Adachi was about to commit suicide by holding his gun to his head, but was stopped by Ameno-sagiri, who takes control of him.

In Episode 6, Adachi is seen coming to Inaba a month or so before Yu did, and has time beforehand to bond with Dojima, who sympathizes with Adachi being transferred from the city. He keeps his apartment meticulously neat and tidy, with hardly any personal touches, and spends all his time at home alone.
Adachi's backstory is extended in the remake anime adaptation.

  +
It is revealed that the reason for his interest in Yamano is that he saw her on the Midnight Channel during the peak of the soul mate rumor. This is the same night he discovered his powers; after being shocked to find the Midnight Channel real, he attempted to touch the screen, at which point his hand went through. The next day, he was tasked with joining security detail for Yamano, presumably his first time learning of her affair with Namatame.
In episode seven, after Yu and Adachi's Persona's clashed against each other, Yu saw a glimpse of Adachi's past and the world from his perspective.

  +
Marie is immediately suspicious of Adachi, sensing Ameno-sagiri inside of him. She attempts to warn Yu to stay away from him, however, Yu has already begun befriending Adachi, attempting to help him and get to know him better by giving him food and inviting him to dinner in the place of the old lady from Adachi's Social Link. Regardless, he tries to talk to Adachi about Marie's concerns but Adachi brushes it off, instead, calling Marie's character into question, which could have been meant to foreshadow Marie's own true nature. He then challenges some of Yu's views, telling him that sometimes what an individual does to try and help others isn't always good for that person. It's also shown that Adachi never actually ate any of the food Yu made for him, choosing to instead let it build up in his fridge before eventually throwing it all away, along with the old lady's stew pot.
Since he was a high school student, Adachi was seen studying constantly and did not bother with making friendships or joining any clubs. However, he always noticed the students who seemed to be having fun with other people, as well as the people who were noticed for their achievements.

  +
In episode 7, he visits Dojima and Nanako in the hospital. After visiting Nanako in her hospital room, Adachi disappeared as Yu shows up. Later on, he is inside the TV world and explains everything to Yu so he can understand why he hates bonds, then afterwards the two face off. The confrontation between Yu and Adachi goes mostly the same as it did in the game. However, after summoning their Personas and having them clash, the two see a glimpse of each other's life and the world from the other's view.
In the memories of his life in Inaba, it shows that Adachi was always pulled around by Dojima and they shared a close colleague relation as partners close enough that Dojima even got. However, when Yu came to Inaba, it seems that Adachi felt that Yu had taken away whatever amicable place he had in Inaba and also became jealous of the bonds that Yu had with his friends and family; Yu who had seemingly used the same cup that had been set aside for Adachi at the Dojima house. Later, however, after Yu single-handedly defeated Adachi, Yu revealed that even Adachi had a bond with him by revealing that the cup for Adachi was actually Adachi's own unique cup, Yu's cup was pink while Adachi's cup was red as part of a four cup set with the rest of the Dojima family.

  +
In the vision, Yu sees Adachi as a high school student forgoing friendships and fun in order to spend all his time studying. Then a university student trying to avoid others while becoming more disdainful of people, and eventually an uncharacteristically neat and put-together detective who seems pleased with his job. However, despite all his hard work, he is often passed over for recognized achievements while younger, more talented detectives are noticed and praised by others. This makes him realize that only talent can get a person through life, while those without it are doomed to fail no matter what they do or how hard they work.
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
Adachi suddenly reappears after the red fog covers Inaba and seems to know what is going on. He has more knowledge of Persona users and the Shadow Operatives and though his objective and motives are unknown, he clearly states he is not working with Sho Minazuki and apparently has some business to attend to at the top of the Tartarus-esque tower that appeared at Yasogami High School. It also appears both him and Sho are aware of each other's presence.

  +
When the vision finally gets to Inaba, Adachi's fondness of the Dojimas is shown more clearly, showing him enjoying his time with his partner and being happy while holding hands with Nanako. With Yu's arrival, however, Adachi starts to feel as if his place in Inaba is threatened and he begins to grow jealous of the bonds Yu has with his family and friends, things Adachi himself never really had. It is also revealed that Yu's acts of kindness and attempts to befriend him were only making things worse and driving Adachi further over the edge, demonstrating exactly what Adachi was telling him earlier.
Adachi appears as a DLC character at the cost of 800 yen, however, those that pre-ordered the game or purchased him in the North American network store launch at week one will get him for free. In addition, he plays a major role in a scenario called "Episode Adachi", which covers his role in the game, as well as his relationship with Sho Minazuki. In his debut trailer, he is first seen walking through the halls of the transformed Yasogami High, with Yu, Chie, and Yosuke looking at him in shock that he is even here, as during the events of Persona 4 Arena, Adachi was in prison.

  +
Yu and Adachi later fight one on one. This time though the focus of the fight is their different viewpoints on bonds, with the fight culminating once again in a destroyed version of the Dojima residence. Adachi even gets punched several times by Yu when both of them reach exhaustion from battling with their Personas; After defeating him, Yu helps Adachi realize that he did in fact have a bond of his own, by placing a matching red mug that had been intended for him alongside the rest of the family's cups; a family set he was always a part of even when he thought he wasn't.
His intro starts with the police still questioning his methods for the two murders in Inaba, which they still do not believe Adachi's words on the matter. However, in a twist of irony of being physically assaulted by a brainwashed police officer in an interrogation room (much like how Adachi dealt with his second and third victims), Adachi finds himself in the TV world once more.

  +
When Ameno-sagiri takes him over this time, he does not have the eye feature he did in the first anime, but rather he is immediately covered in shadows and transformed. From inside of Ameno-sagiri, Adachi gives Yu Magatsu-Izanagi, which Yu then uses to quickly defeat the god and save him.
Upon meeting Yu and company, he explains that he originally planned to take it easy, but "things happened" so he had little choice in the matter, in that beforehand Sho attempted to have Adachi join his side out of similar mindsets towards the world. However, Adachi refuses to be lumped with him, and thus is tossed into the P-1 Climax out of irony and little choice to distract the Investigation Team.

  +
Afterwards, Adachi is brought back to the real world. While inside the Junes store, he is shown being carried on a stretcher as the Investigation Team watches him being taken away by the ambulance.
He somewhat retains his carefree and aloof personality, stating that it's rather nice of them to think about Inaba's future, but later says that he couldn't care either way, as he follows his own set of rules. He also says that he's "glad" that the group is still woefully ignorant about things as ever. Concluding his trailer, he states that he doesn't care how many times it'll take, he's more than happy to put the Investigation Team in its place. However, many of his acts tend to be covert clues, since Adachi himself can't reveal too much without getting killed due to Minazuki's grip on him.

  +
The 4th volume of the P4GA blu-rays included a special alternate ending episode called "Thank You Mr. Accomplice" based on Golden's accomplice bad ending where Yu, wanting to help Adachi, burns the only evidence that could be used against him. The episode ends with Yu leaving a foggy Inaba while Adachi comments on how boring everything is.
He also feels that Sho could've redeemed himself in comparison to Adachi himself, for Adachi states he's more wicked and cruel Sho could ever be, and feels it's not too late for him.

Adachi appears as a DLC character. He also plays a major role in a scenario called "Episode Adachi," which covers his role in the game, specifically his actions in Episode P4, as well as his relationship with Sho Minazuki. Adachi is also available as a DLC navigator for VS mode.

  +
His intro starts with the police still questioning his methods for the two murders in Inaba. Adachi is passive and cooperative with them despite all their abuse, until one of them speaks ill of Dojima, at which point Adachi brings up the officer's own unethical methods and rumors heard while he was still on the force. The angered officer assaults him, and after being brainwashed by Minazuki, pushes Adachi into a TV.
In the end, Adachi is pummeled by Sho Minazuki (especially in the P4 story route) for trying to betray him and destroy what Sho had tried hard to gather up, and Sho states he was simply using Adachi as a tool in the first place (all while Adachi berates Sho about their differences and how he can redeem himself).

  +
In his meeting with Minazuki, the latter tells Adachi of his plan to destroy the world using latent remnants of Ameno-sagiri within Adachi and his Persona to tame the being that he intends to summon. He insists Adachi must follow along with his plan or be killed himself. Adachi understands Sho's mindset but wants no part of the plan due to his renewed conviction, and pretends to go along with the plan. After meeting the other personality, Sho, and being told he can do whatever he wants so long as it doesn't get in his way, Adachi tries to come up with a method to sabotage Sho's plans and help the Investigation Team stop him.
However, Yu manages to arrive on time to halt Sho and fight him to prevent Adachi from being hurt any further, and Yu also manages to see through Adachi's "facade" of simply messing with him and his friends earlier. Minazuki is revealed to have been planning to use Adachi in order to suppress Kagutsuchi, a plan that Kagutsuchi was aware of.

  +
In his encounters with Yu, Yosuke and Chie, he pretends to be cooperating with Sho, and avoids any accusations in the conversation by trying to drop hints and important information for them, hoping they would uncover Sho's plans and hurry to rescue their friends. He even attempts to shield them from Sho and Minazuki by covering their presence and placing himself between Yu and Minazuki during their confrontation.
After Hinokagutsuchi's defeat at Yu's hands, Adachi gets back up and manages to help Yu defeat it by combining the might of both their Izanagi-Personas, and Adachi beforehand comments that Yu "should've finished it off by the time I woke back up".

After the end of the events, Adachi as he says "follows the rules" and hands himself back into prison. Months after, Adachi is paid a visit by Dojima, much to the chagrin of the former. However, after their initial exchange of passive words to one another, both of them can't help but enjoy the time spent catching up again. Adachi noted that he had ended his relationship with Dojima, only to find it re-established. Despite calling it troublesome, he couldn't help but smile and feel a bit relieved that he and Dojima were still friends after everything that transpired last year.

  +
At the top of the tower, Adachi attempts to destroy the collected Persona Fragments and is overpowered by Sho. He was beaten close to death for his betrayal, but remained defiant and even used the same arguments the Investigation Team had used against him in Magatsu Inaba. He was rescued in time by Yu who had seen through Adachi's facade, but passed out, only regaining consciousness in time to confront the summoned Kagutsuchi by himself, and later with Yu, merging the power of their Personas together to defeat Kagutsuchi for good.
His theme/leitmotif is called "A Fool or Clown?", a possible nod to his reversed The Fool or his Social Link in Golden representing the Jester Arcana, as well as nodding to his original boss theme, "A New World Fool".

  +

After losing consciousness, Adachi reawakens again in the hub of the TV world, with Yu and Sho there. He admits that after spending time with Sho, he sees a lot of his personality and mindset in the boy, but feels that Sho has plenty of chances to redeem himself and enjoy his youth. Adachi decides to return to jail to serve his sentence and learns from Yu that Dojima intends to visit him. In the epilogue, many months have passed, the investigation is finally closed and Adachi's trial date is set. As he thinks over everything that happened, he is informed that Dojima has finally come to visit him. Adachi finally began to understand the bonds he used to push away and mock from his playful taunts and conversation with Dojima, accidentally admitting that having a bond like this "isn't so bad after all."

  +
In Episode P4 Adachi does not fight against Kagutsuchi on his own (he and Yu still fuse their Personas, however). He also disappears without any explanation after Kagutsuchi is defeated, much to Yu's shock and confusion.
  +
  +
He appears very briefly in Episode P3. Mitsuru is able to hear him a little as she's regaining consciousness. He reappears near the end, saving Teddie, Mitsuru, Akihiko and Aigis when they are being overwhelmed by a huge mass of Shadows and clearing a way for them to get inside of Junes to save the rest of the Investigation Team, reveals Sho's intent to summon a god and then leaves to head back to the tower. When Labrys makes it to the top of the tower, she sees Adachi knocked out after being beaten by Sho, who claims that Adachi betrayed him and won't tell him what happened to his other personality. It is unclear how much of the confrontation between them remained the same. Just like in Episode P4, Adachi vanishes after Kagutsuchi is defeated but Labrys believes Elizabeth teleported him away someplace safe.
  +
  +
Adachi also appears in arcade mode. His role and intentions there are of course vague, and he and Minazuki never confirm or deny their involvement with one another.

Playstyle
Playstyle
Adachi's playstyle can be described as a mixture between Rushdown and Grappler. He is heavily dependent on his Persona Magatsu-Izanagi, and most of his normals aren't safe to use and leave him out in the open, combined with the fact that he also needs most of his SP moves to help continue his higher damaging combos does somewhat hurt Adachi. His normal C attacks, which lead into somewhat violent animations, are both usually used as combo enders, and his gunshots are mostly used to squeeze out some small damage at the end. Out of all of his supers, two of them stand out the most: Heat Riser and Magatsu Mandala. Upon using Heat Riser, an icon of himself appears above his SP gauge which represents that, for a short period of time, Adachi will have increased damage. With Magatsu Mandala, a small icon of Magatsu-Izanagi will appear above his SP gauge. Once this happens, all of Adachi's Persona moves will have the ability of inflicting a different ailment. The following moves inflict the following ailments:

His theme/leitmotif is called "A Fool or Clown?," a possible nod to his reversed The Fool or his Social Link in Golden representing the Jester Arcana, as well as nodding to his original boss theme, "A New World Fool."

Persona 4: Dancing All Night
  +
Tohru Adachi is a DLC playable character in Persona 4: Dancing All Night. Since he does not appear in the main storyline, he is only available in Free Dance. Adachi can only be a FEVER partner with Yu Narukami. Adachi's outfit has no alternatives save for DLC, but one can add accessories such as glasses, headphones, hair color, and color contacts. Purchasing him will include an angry Dojima-mask for Yu, making it look like Adachi is dancing with Dojima. His DLC outfit is that of Katsuya Suou from Persona 2: Eternal Punishment.
  +
  +
His dance style specializes in isolation, though not very cleanly, where he moves one part of his body and keeps the rest of himself completely still. He also has moments where he moves smoothly but frenetically, showcasing his unpredictable nature. Part of Adachi's dance is interpretive, telling the story of forces controlling him like a puppet and then him breaking out of that control.
  +
  +
Persona 5
  +
Adachi is indirectly referenced during a cop drama on TV on December 12th: The detective Sakyo Hinoshita, having investigated a murder case involving hung corpses from telephone poles and TV antennas, asks the suspect of his motive, who dryly replies with, "Because the world sucks... I guess." That would enrage the detective.

Tohru AdachiSocial Link

"Let's be honest. Wouldn't it be better if that kind of reality was wiped away?"
—Tohru Adachi, Persona 4

Tohru Adachi is a character in Persona 4. He is a police detective and Ryotaro Dojima's partner.

Appearances

Design

Adachi is a young adult with short, unkempt, black hair and gray eyes. He wears a black suit with a long-sleeved white dress shirt, a crooked dark red tie, and brown field boots.

In Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, he wears a yellow jacket during his pre-battle sequence. The jacket was also seen in his concept art, and he was seen wearing it in Persona 4 The Golden Animation.

Personality

"Why choose reality when you can have a world of your own making? That's clearly the choice, y'know...I mean come on, we all prefer the easier life. Hehehehe.... You see, all reality ever gives you is boredom and bickering. And no one truly wants to live in a world like that. It's only because they think they have to accept it that they choose to buck up and deal. There's only one thing that's going to set you apart and let you succeed in life: it's the magic ticket they call 'talent'. And if you don't have it, then you're left to rot in despair. Game over. So wouldn't we better off without this reality crap? Someday, you'll all understand what I'm saying. No matter what you try and do, reality sucks. And I, for one, am sick of it."
—Adachi to Yu, Persona 4 The Animation
AdachiDojima

Adachi with the Dojimas.

AdachiAbuse2

Adachi being abused by Dojima, as usual.

Persona_4_Golden_Boss_Shadow_Adachi_and_Ameno-Sagiri_-Very_Hard-

Persona 4 Golden Boss Shadow Adachi and Ameno-Sagiri -Very Hard-

Adachi on his nihilistic mindset.

P4AU (Adachi DLC Episode, Adachi and Dojima reconnected)

Adachi with Dojima in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.

Profile

Persona 4

"One chose to avert his eyes from the truth, and allowed evil to taint his awakened power..."
—Izanami, Persona 4

When he was a child, Adachi's parents wanted him to be successful and only cared about his grades. When he grew up, he enrolled in the police force merely to be allowed to carry a gun. However, due to a mistake, he was dispatched to Inaba to become Ryotaro Dojima's assistant detective, leading to him finding life in the town boring enough to resent it. Dojima welcomed him as a partner, but didn't treat him with high regard due to his professional incompetence. He also didn't have much income, so he had to eat boiled cabbage almost daily.

Outside the Midnight Channel, upon the police's arrival, an exhausted Adachi is taken out on a stretcher, a personal favor from Dojima. Further surprised by this, Adachi finally acknowledges that despite Dojima's strict orders towards him, Dojima still cares for him as his partner. Guilt-ridden and touched, Adachi swore to confess his crimes to the police, giving his full cooperation.

Persona 4 Golden

Main article: Social Link/Tohru Adachi

In the enhanced port for the PlayStation Vita, Adachi is a newly-added Social Link, associated with the new Jester. The Social Link can be started as early as May. Said Social Link focuses on Adachi's dissatisfaction with life at the countryside.

Meanwhile, after being invited over at the Dojima Residence by the protagonist, Adachi spends time with him and Nanako for dinner and to help with homework, acting like a genuine relative.

If the protagonist reaches Rank 6 of Adachi's Social Link, should he deduce he's the killer on December 5th, he has the option of not revealing him, in addition to later choosing to destroy evidence, thus letting him go free.

Accomplice Ending

"You want to find the truth, without being swayed by the voices of society... But the truth is a sinister thing. It seems like something absolute, yet it exists in everyone's hearts. For you, THIS was the "truth." Hahaha."
—Tohru Adachi, Persona 4 Golden

If the protagonist chooses to keep silent about Adachi being the prime suspect on December 5th, they will be able to meet with him prior to the protagonist leaving in March and confront him about being the killer. Adachi plays innocent, pretending not to know anything, and taunts the protagonist, saying that even if he was the killer, there is no proof. In a long chain of dialogue options, if the protagonist is vague, Adachi leaves and the "neutral" bad ending (the same bad ending that happens when the protagonist fails to convince the party that Namatame is not the killer by ambiguous statements) is triggered.

Tohru_Adachi_Laughing_(Persona_4_Golden)

Tohru Adachi Laughing (Persona 4 Golden)

Adachi laughing once the evidence is burned.

True/Good Ending

"When I'm here, I think of Dojima-san, Nanako-chan, and you. A lot. Though my time with you didn't seem like much fun before... it's strange. Despite it all, I'm grateful to you. Thank you. But let me just say this: You're a dumbass. You take the path you choose. And I'll think about what that means to me, too. I doubt I'll ever see you again... but stay healthy. Goodbye."
—Tohru Adachi's letter, Persona 4 Golden

If the protagonist chooses to reveal Adachi as the killer on December 5th, the scene plays out like normal, with the exception of Rise mentioning that Adachi seems to be subconsciously calling out to and waiting for the protagonist after confronting him in the TV world.

Adachi's Social Link leveling up.

Persona 4 The Animation

In the first anime adaptation, Adachi's role remains mostly unchanged.

During his confrontation with the Investigation Team in Magatsu Inaba, he leads them on a chase which causes Magatsu Inaba to manifest images of the past, as well as destroyed versions of various Inaba locations.

Adachi being control by Ameno sagiri

Adachi controlled by Ameno-sagiri

After his defeat, Adachi attempts to commit suicide by shooting himself in the head, but is interrupted by Ameno-sagiri possessing his body. with his eyes resembling Ameno-sagiri's lens.

After everything is over, Yu extends a hand to Adachi, telling him "let's go home." This action alone seems to have a huge effect on Adachi, as it implies Yu still views Adachi as someone close to their family despite everything that happened.

Afterwards, while he is in prison, Adachi sends Yu and the Investigation team a letter, stating his suspicions about there being a higher being orchestrating the entire thing. But he can only give vague clues at best; and tells Yu it is up to him to solve the mystery.

The Golden Animation

In Episode 6, Adachi is seen coming to Inaba a month or so before Yu did, and has time beforehand to bond with Dojima, who sympathizes with Adachi being transferred from the city. He keeps his apartment meticulously neat and tidy, with hardly any personal touches, and spends all his time at home alone.

Afterwards, Adachi is brought back to the real world. While inside the Junes store, he is shown being carried on a stretcher as the Investigation Team watches him being taken away by the ambulance.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax

"Don't... think we're the same, you little brat. You think the whole world hates you because someone didn't treat you right... You're nothing but a little kid throwing a tantrum. You know, I seriously hate this world... Don't put me in the same shoes as a half-ass brat like you... Please? Haha..."
—Tohru Adachi to Sho Minazuki, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax

Adachi appears as a DLC character. He also plays a major role in a scenario called "Episode Adachi," which covers his role in the game, specifically his actions in Episode P4, as well as his relationship with Sho Minazuki. Adachi is also available as a DLC navigator for VS mode.

P4AU (Adachi DLC Episode, Adachi gets beat up by Minazuki)

Adachi is beaten by Sho.

In Episode P4 Adachi does not fight against Kagutsuchi on his own (he and Yu still fuse their Personas, however). He also disappears without any explanation after Kagutsuchi is defeated, much to Yu's shock and confusion.

Adachi also appears in arcade mode. His role and intentions there are of course vague, and he and Minazuki never confirm or deny their involvement with one another.

His normal C attacks, which lead into somewhat violent grab animations, are both usually used as combo enders, and his gunshots are mostly used to squeeze out some small damage at the end. Out of all of his supers, two of them stand out the most: Heat Riser and Magatsu Mandala. Upon using Heat Riser, an icon of himself appears above his SP gauge which represents that, for the remainder of the round (or until his Persona is broken), Adachi will receive a 10% increase in damage and defense. With Magatsu Mandala, a small icon of Magatsu-Izanagi appears above his SP gauge, also applied for the current round or until a Persona break. Once this happens, all of Adachi's Persona moves will have the ability to inflict a different ailment and non-Fatal Counter command throw super, Ghastly Wail, receives a significant damage increase.

Persona 5

Adachi is indirectly referenced during a cop drama on TV on December 12th: The detective Sakyo Hinoshita, having investigated a murder case involving hung corpses from telephone poles and TV antennas, asks the suspect of his motive, who dryly replies with, "Because the world sucks... I guess." That would enrage the detective.

Arabic تورو أداتشي

Etymology

  • The name Tohru means "transparent, permeate, filter, penetrate" (透).
  • Tohru's surname Adachi means "leg, foot, paw, stick, limb, shank, pace, step, pes, tread, footstep/footpace, skirt, glutinosity, clutch, spiculum, pediment, adhesiveness, clamminess, stickiness" (足) (a) and "standing" (立) (tachi/dachi).

Trivia

  • His style in summoning his Persona is clutching his head in pain, similar to Takaya Sakaki from Persona 3.
  • When Yu confronts Adachi in Persona 4 The Animation, Persona 4 The Golden Animation and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Adachi calls out his Persona's name. These are the only times he says the name of his Persona.
AdachiCabbage

Adachi with cabbage.

  • Adachi's habit of eating boiled cabbage when he lacked income has been sort of a gag among the fanbase, to the point that officials made fun of it. While in Persona 4 Golden, Adachi states he doesn't like cabbage that much and could only afford it at the time due to his budget. The other adaptations, such as The Animation run with it, including his Japanese title in Ultimax.
    • In the Puzzle & Dragons collaboration, a loaf of cabbage can be seen next to the artwork of his non-evolved form.
  • In episode seven of Persona 4 The Golden Animation, he summons his Persona left-handed.
  • Adachi's alternate costume palettes in Persona 4 Arena feature references to Persona/Atlus characters Ryotaro Dojima, Kyouji Kuzunoha, Katsuya Suou and Theodore. Outside references include Yuuki Terumi from BlazBlue, Robo Ky MK. II from Guilty Gear Isuka (other Arc System Works games), and DC villain the Joker.
  • Adachi's tie was a gift from Dojima. Dojima wanted him to look proper since Adachi never wore a tie previously.
  • Adachi carries a lighter on him, but it's only for giving Dojima a light for his cigarette. Adachi himself doesn't smoke. In Golden, this lighter can be used by the protagonist to burn the evidence of his involvement in the murders should the protagonist decide to cover up for him.
  • As revealed on Persona Stalker Club, although Adachi, being a police detective, was legally allowed to carry a gun, he wasn't allowed to take it home with him, so he carried a toy gun on his person at those times. However, in Ultimax, it is revealed that he modified it to shoot real bullets when he first became a cop because he wasn't given a real gun right away.
  • One of Adachi's hobbies is to perform maintenance on his revolver. This, alongside the point above, indicates that Adachi might have some knowledge in handling and customizing firearms.
  • In Ultimax, like Yu, Adachi possesses Ziodyne as well. However, it isn't an SP Skill and is instead a Persona Rush/D attack. In addition, it is colored red rather than blue. This also applies to his Cross Slash variation.
    • Magatsu-Izanagi can also use Megidola, though it uses Megidolaon in Golden.
    • Heat Riser can also be used as an offensive skill, despite it being a buff.
  • Adachi's Cut-in image in both Persona 4 and its anime adaptation showed him with yellow eyes. In Ultimax, however, Adachi's eyes are normal. This happens since he was fighting while being taken over in Persona 4 and its sub-media.
  • Like Sho Minazuki, Elizabeth, Margaret, Marie and Shadow Labrys with Asterius, Adachi does not possess a Shadow-type form.
  • Adachi and Yu Narukami share the same English voice actor while the two have opposing yet crucial roles. This is similar to how the protagonist of Persona 3 and Ryoji Mochizuki both share an English and Japanese voice actor, yet have opposing roles that greatly impact the story. However, in the Japanese version, Yu and Adachi have different voice actors.
  • Adachi's role in the story was initially a red herring, according to the Official Design Works artbook.
